Datuk A. Kadir Jasin says appointing Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali as opposition leader could draw more youths to Pakatan Rakyat. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 13, 2015.A veteran journalist says Pakatan Rakyat will be able to attract the support of more youths if it appoints Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali as opposition leader.

Datuk A. Kadir Jasin (pic, right), former group editor-in-chief of Umno-linked newspaper New Straits Times wrote in his blog today that appointing Azmin would pose a threat to ruling coalition Barisan Nasional as youths would give their sympathy and protest votes to the opposition in the next general election.“If Azmin is appointed opposition leader it will give a youthful edge to Pakatan Rakyat and stimulate the younger generation to give its support to the coalition," he wrote in his blog, The Scribe, today.Kadir added however that a more immediate concern among some quarters was that Anwar's incarceration could result in critics of Datuk Seri Najib Razak training their guns on him and calling for the prime minister to step down. The veteran newsman added that even former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that if he were currently prime minister, he would resign, and that he would have heeded calls from people who thought he was not performing.Adding that Umno was aware of the “illness" it was facing, Kadir said the party also knew the type of “treatment" that was required."The reality is that Umno is old and it needs a radical anti-aging treatment. Without it, Umno will die of old age," he wrote. He added that even among the party's top brass, they were aware of the actual situation but did not dare opt for the right treatment. He said going by analysis done, there was every possibility that Umno could lose its hold on the 88 seats it secured in the 13th general election, as more youths register to vote in the next election."There is concern that Umno's seats could reduce to 70 or even 60 if the current situation is allowed to persist," he said.Adding that the ruling coalition could not depend on Chinese and Indian votes, he said this meant that BN's strengthening must begin with Umno."BN cannot gain strength against attacks by PR and at the same time transform itself to attract the younger generation if it does not free itself from its feudal and dynasty-type hierarchy," Kadir wrote.Saying that Umno needed “major surgery" and treatment for its cancerous parts, Kadir added: “Or Umno can depend on bomohs, fortune tellers and witchcraft who will echo what Umno bigwigs want people to hear rather than what they should hear." – February 13, 2015.
